I am a Senior Lecturer in Fashion and Race at Central Saint Martins working across the fashion programme to support decolonial fashion perspectives.

My research emerges from experiences of teaching fashion design over the last twenty years and recognising the urgent need to explore alternative non-extractive, anti-racist and social justice-oriented forms of fashion design pedagogies. This approach emphasizes a more situated, relational and contextualized fashion design praxis by centring plural, non-heteropatriarchal, noncapitalist forms of fashion inspired by pre-colonial concepts of fashion that respect our planet and multi species.

My AHRC funded PhD titled 'Pluriversal Fashions: Towards an Anti-Racist Fashion Design Pedagogy' investigated how white normativity works to exclude non Eurocentric fashion design epistemologies in fashion design pedagogies and used new decolonial feminist pedagogical frameworks to counter dominant dualist definitions of fashion design.

I am currently working on a monograph 'Fashion and Anti-Racism' (Bloomsbury forthcoming).

This was the first publication to examine “Sneaker Culture” and its worldwide impact and far reaching influence, which permeates almost every aspect of popular culture, all which happened to coincide the infancy of the internet.

Ayre's art direction has been recognised, and awarded internationally including at Tokyo Animation Festival, BDA, World & European Promax, New York Art Directors, D&AD and BAFTA.

Her multi-award winning brand, From Somewhere (1997 - 2014), was pioneering in the field of upcycling and sold in some of the world’s best boutiques; her collaboration include collections for Tesco Clothing, Robe Di Kappa, Topshop and Speedo.

In 2006, she started Estethica, the highly acclaimed Sustainable Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week (which she has recently reformed), and in 2013 she co-founded Fashion Revolution, now the world’s largest fashion activism movement, with teams in over 80 countries.

Orsola has been on the jury for the British Fashion Council’s New Gen initiative from 2019 and on the jury and advisory board for the ITS (International Talent Showcase) in Trieste since 2020.

She has been a regular at Central Saint Martins, where she was a Practitioner in Residence for the MA (2016 - 2017) and a Visiting fellow (2017 - 2021) and is an Associate Visiting Professor for the faculty of the Arts at Middlesex University.

A fascination of mine is to understand the fundamental mechanics of footwear, the key sequence of operations which take place before a shoe comes into existence. Charged with the desire to investigate sustainable practices whilst exploring alternative disciplines of Sculpture, Engineering, Bio Design and Performance Art.

Unafraid to fail I will attempt to execute key principles: of transference of space / inviting new perspectives. The multiple uses of in contrast to how far can a concept evolve / As an idea progresses can we assign new purpose.

To explore without boundaries is an ambitious task to say the least, I understand there is a level of naivety as I explore the unknown as my practice takes shape. The challenges I’m faced with may alter the outcome of the question or the practicality of executing the task in hand.

Using materials found in 20th century American informed domestic spaces, I recontextualize the archetype of heteronormative spaces in a queer coded context. I correlate queer and color theory via textile specific approach as an antithesis to a patriarchal, hierarchical and chromaphobic approach to modernist design. I aim to do as by using humor as a means of protest.

Drawing inspiration from Derek Jarman, Gees Bend, and the Black Mountain College, I take inspiration from hobby crafts as a means of a passtime and take them out of their cultural framework. Exhibiting that such handicrafts have as much validity as a conceptual artist with formal education, the hierarchy of concept over labor can be dissolved. Those behind the labor are seen as humans, not machines, physically mending the mistakes of the past in order to make an inclusive future. I bring together artforms and the communities formed from them that have been historically separateBy using found and secondhand textiles like brown paper bags, tablecloths, and worn-out T-shirts, I metaphorically and ph aim to use making as a form of resistant healing to a flawed system of labor and gender roles.

I work in the field of Circular Design, specializing in the reuse and upcycling of industrial textile waste through indigenous craft practices of India, building replicable systems that allow decentralised development whilst creating conversational products through zero-waste practices. I enjoy designing fashion and textiles that are environmentally, socially and culturally responsible whilst communicating unique stories that are important to me in an emotionally engaging aesthetic.

I am a graduate in craft design with a specialization in textiles from the IICD, India. My subject of study involved design intervention in traditional Indian crafts to bring contemporary context to them and develop products and services with these traditional practices that have greater relevance in the times of today. At my graduation, I won the gold medal for Academic Excellence (2013-2017). I was also selected (with scholarship) to be a part of the CLLB (creative management) course from the IIM-A and received the best project award for my submission ‘Iro Iro: crafting fashion out of waste’.

IRO IRO now functions as a zero-waste lifestyle and fashion design practice. IRO IRO has been featured in many reputed publications and received award nominations from esteemed platforms, such as Lakmé fashion week, Lexus design award.

Current works include hand painted and silkscreen works and installations. In the creation of these large scale pieces, control is often relinquished and liquid colour is allowed to move freely around the silk to allow the work to find its own conclusion.

Working with art and intelligent materials to improve health and wellbeing in an increasingly chaotic world, colour is translated into code, pattern into numbers and movement into sounds.

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art she has worked in research to create innovative textiles and garments for Fairspace at Imperial College, to improve the health of astronauts aboard the International Space Station. I am an award-winning fashion writer, curator and sustainability specialist working at the intersection of creative direction and journalism. With experience across strategy, ideation and creative delivery, I craft compelling campaigns with storytelling at the heart.

At the centre of my work is a drive to make sustainability feel fun, desirable and accessible. In 2019 I founded the semi-satirical magazine TRASHMag that won the LVMH Green Trail Award for bringing a humorous tone of voice and light-hearted visual style to the sustainability conversation.

As a writer, my work has been published in i-D Magazine, The Guardian, 10 Magazine and MW Magazine. Notable interviewees include Gabriela Hearst, Cyrill Gutsch, Jonathan Anderson, Orsola de Castro, Clare Press, Matthew Williams, Bay Garnett and Christopher Raeburn.

I am an advocate for second-hand shopping; it being the most planet-friendly (and fun) way to shop. I am also passionate about platforming up-and-coming designers working with recycled and bio-based materials. At London Fashion Week in 2019, I curated an exhibition space as part of the British Fashion Council’s Positive Fashion Exhibition featuring some of the most exciting designers, jewellers and milliners creating fashion today.

I have spoken to a number of different audiences about sustainable fashion – from 9-year-old students at The Fashion School to bankers in the City of London – and have previously featured on Channel 5 News Live. Other speaking appearances include the Depop Head Office and Colèchi’s Future of Fashion Media event.

Jill Kennedy-McNeill is an artist based in London. Her work considers the practical and theoretical intricacy of creative labour in order to investigate the emotional resonances of economy, organisation and bureaucracy. Her multidisciplinary practice has its origins in garment and textile construction and she is frequently called back to these politically charged modalities both as a vehicle for the realisation of works, and as a form of creative pedagogy.

Katy Mason makes striking creations out of objects that might conventionally be perceived as rubbish but have been turned into works of art.

Mason studied Fashion Design at Nottingham Trent University, where she found that the intuitive element of draping (a process of creating a pattern by positioning and pinning fabric in different ways on a mannequin) came more naturally to her than the more rigid flat pattern cutting. It was in Berlin, where Mason lived between 2018 and 2020, that she began to see value in using the discarded objects she found all around her as material for fashion. Along with her two friends Sophie Ruane and Jasmine Febbraro, Mason would prowl the streets for bin bags full of clothes and bits of scrap that could be used to create their quirky designs. As this hobby came to fruition, the trio founded the up-cycling clothes brand Soup Archive, which is still running today.

Although she still collaborates with Soup Archive, Katy, now back in the UK, has moved away from clothes and into jewellery making and sculpture. Taking influence from her fashion background, she describes her craft as ‘object draping’ due to its improvisational nature. Mason has just come to the end of her year’s studio residency at Sarabande Foundation and is moving to a new studio at World’s End on the King’s Road.

In 2021, Katy co-founded Trash Club alongside fellow artist Matthew Needham.

Matthew Needham (b. 1993, Nuneaton, UK) is a British-Czech artist and curator, known for his contributions toward sustainability within the British fashion industry.

As an artist and curator, Needham’s practice focuses on bricolaging fly-tipped waste within his unique exhibition aesthetic. His ever-evolving investigations into the Anthropocene pose greater questions towards humanity's curation of the world around us and its dissemination within nature.

Matthew holds the title of Sustainability Lecturer for Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins, offering his extensive knowledge of sustainable practice and thinking to the minds of tomorrow.

In 2021, Needham co-founded ‘Trash Club’ alongside fellow artist and collaborator, Katy Mason.

I am an artist and designer living in South Carolina where I produce unique paintings and art to wear. My interest is grounded in sophisticated design that is well made and focuses on my strong interest in materiality that includes new and found metals such as plastics, laminates, natural and synthetic substances.

After finishing graduate school, I designed and manufactured art jewelry under the name of Jane Nodine Hardwear. From the mid 1990's to 2018 I served as professor of art and university gallery director at University of South Carolina Upstate. Having a strong interest in materiality and a personal connection to the natural world, my work is inspired by elements that show the passage of time and a record of aging. Informed by the macro and micro world, I focus on explorations of color, texture and substance manipulation that yield unusual and seductive visual results. My attention to surface and detailed foundation layers places an emphasis on the appearance of work as I strive to attract the viewer in for closer observation. I work intuitively and describe my approach to artmaking as a process of excavation. There is no map or definitive end and no preconceived plan of travel, only a sense that something waits to be revealed.

But within this desolate landscape stands SAVESTUDIOS. With resilience, they serve as a mouthpiece through which our world continues to live and breathe. Here, nature manifests itself through their latest collection, "2100: End of the World," the two now coexist in a strange, almost prophetic relationship. As ancient myths collide with scientific foresight, SAVESTUDIOS invites us into a new world teetering on the edge of cataclysm b, brimming with a quiet, resilient beauty.

Savestudios’s journey into this apocalyptic future begins not in the future but in the past. Along the banks of the River of Theme, they join a group of mudlarkers, sifting through the remnants of bygone eras. These historical artefacts—clay pipes, ceramics—become the foundation of their creative process, informing designs with a sense of continuity between past and future, destruction and creation. The rough, tactile presence of these found objects contrasts starkly with the delicate fabrics they adorn, symbolising the resilience required to rebuild from ruins.

Eunice Pais is a visual artist who works with photography, video, fabric manipulation, and text. Influenced by her Mozambican and Portuguese heritage, Pais delves into human-nature interactions, identities, labor, social ecology, and futures through speculative and interdisciplinary research.

Through auto-ethnographic and anthropological approaches, her artistic practice serves as a constant space for questioning and unraveling the 'networks of existence' that comprehend the dynamics of the 'intangible' as a methodology.

Drawing on family and societal knowledge passed down through generations, and her scientific background, Pais deconstructs contemporary fluxes of reality through semiotic studies of folklore and myths as spaces of liminality in ongoing cultural transformations, thus inherently engaging with the questions posed by the work pursuing decoloniality and equity. Her art is a tribute to inclusion, reclamation, equity, joy, and nostalgia.

Driven by a persistent question regarding the ethical implications of photography as a practice for both people and the environment, Eunice founded PAIS- Ethical Image-making in 2020. This photo production agency addresses systemic issues within fashion photography and visual art by championing inclusivity and amplifying diverse voices. Through deep community engagement, PAIS fosters regenerative work models within photography, paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.

In 2022. Eunice showcased her work at The Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool (UK), as well as at the Photo Fringe Festival in Brighton (UK) and the State of Fashion's Biennale in Arnhem (The Netherlands). This year, her art has been exhibited in Leicester (UK), Paris (France), and Rome (Italy).

She has been awarded the Alumni Engagement Fund by the U.S Embassy to design and develop a methodology addressing neurodiversity inclusion in societal spheres (education and art).

She creates hand-dyed and hand-woven artwork. Her process investigates both digital explorations and expressive winding techniques, which are influenced by her cultural heritage. Her use of rich colour and detailed pattern translated into fabrics illustrate her style as a designer.

Annie Purdy is a Footwear Artist, Designer and Shoemaker.

A graduate of Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion, where she won the ‘Sustainable Development Prize’ at the 2023 Cordwainers Footwear Awards, she is now enrolled on the Fashion Masters with a focus in Footwear at the Royal College of Art, where she is currently supported by the Max Mara scholarship.

Annie’s work is a material commentary centred around the experiences of women who hike, run, camp and their community, presented through the vehicle of upcycled footwear. The footwear artist introduces her work through the medium of reimagining post-consumer waste and hiking-associated materials found on British coasts and hiking trails. From broken hot water bottles, tents and kites - reconstructed into interesting shoe uppers - her narrative aims to extend the notions of envisioning sustainable female-made footwear.

She is an avid runner and co-leads the female-run club ‘Athene Runs’ and is also the co-founder of ‘Swamp Wi, a queer feminist arts collective.

Cassie Quinn is a multi-disciplinary designer and is the founder of CQ Studio, which she founded during her Master’s in Biodesign from Central Saint Martins. She conducts R&D of regenerative textiles for fashion. She focuses on post-industrial waste, regenerative plants and post-consumer waste to demonstrate transforming waste into worth by developing innovative materials, including using food waste to clean wastewater to make plastic-free sequins. She uses techniques from traditional crafts to new technologies including embroidery, laser-cutting, biology and plant pigment extraction.

Alongside researching innovative materials, she delivers workshops for organisations such as Soho House, Prince’s Trust, Spotlight Youth Centre & The Victoria & Albert Museum. She has also worked in partnership with brands to deliver workshops including Size? and Project ReGo. Her work has been presented at exhibitions and in publications including Wallpaper* Magazine, Future Fabrics Expo and the IUCN World Congress on the LVMH stand. She has been awarded many accolades including the EU Commission Worth II Partnership Project, the Mayor of London’s Entrepreneur Awards for Creative Industries, and the Young Innovators Award supported by Innovate UK.

Rahemur Rahman (born 1990) is a British-Bengali artist and fashion designer known for his significant contributions to the British-Bengali diaspora and innovative use of traditional Bengali block printing techniques through his eponymous menswear label. Rahman is known for his focus on sustainable and ethically produced garments and is the first Bangladeshi fashion designer in history to showcase their work at London Fashion Week.

Rahman was born and raised in Tower Hamlets, London. Rahman's father worked as a tailor in the rag trade, the immigrant-run clothing manufacturing business that provides cheap labour for the fashion industry. Rahman's work is heavily influenced by his Bengali heritage and the city in which he grew up.

Rahman graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design, London, alongside fellow London-based designers Richard Malone and A Sai Ta.

In 2019, he presented his first London Fashion Week collection entitled 'For the people who dream in colour' that aimed to reinterpret and re-tell stories of South Asian identity. Drawing inspiration from his family's photographs, his father's love of traditional British tailoring, and his mother's love of clothing from her homeland, Rahman's collection blended Western and South Asian elements, reflecting the cultural duality of his own family and their connection to the rag trade.

As a member of the Bengali diaspora, Rahman is deeply committed to preserving and promoting his cultural heritage, and reimagining how queer creatives in the South Asian community are perceived. He is also an active member of the London art and fashion scenes, and is known for his collaborative spirit and dedication to mentoring emerging Muslim talents.

Finalist for the British Fashion Council's Changemakers 'People' prize in 2021.

Jodie Ruffle is an embroidery and embellishment designer for the fashion industry, living and working in East London.

After graduating from a BA in Fashion and working in industry as a designer/maker, Jodie realised her true calling was in textiles and went on to study Couture Embellishment and MA Fashion, specialising in embroidery. Since graduating, Jodie has worked with brands including Alexander McQueen, Ashish, &Daughter, Kurt Geiger and Mih Jeans as well as collaborating with menswear brand Parc London, embroidery designer Ellie Mac and textile company DMC.

Drawing inspiration from remote islander life in the Isle of Man, my concepts are heavily inspired by Manx racing culture and folklore superstitions with the occasional ‘emo’ teenage-anx throwback; dubbing my creations as an eco-eerie-punk fusion.

Rather than fall slave to the usual fashion calendar constraints - I work towards closing loops rather than seasons, reimagining life to disregarded throwaway materials. From working with laddered tights to old racing leathers - each collection is fully transparent with a story to tell, thus giving way to my ‘throwbacks & throwaways’ ethos.

Niamh Tuft is the Climate Action Manager at University of the Arts London. Her role is to coordinate and manage the Climate Action Plan across the university which encompasses our activities in teaching and learning, research, knowledge exchange, community action and operations.

Flyn Vibert is a photographer and artist experimenting with what they call ‘organic transformations’. That is images made by hand through a series of alternative processes, without the aid of digital software or traditional analog techniques.

Flyn has spent the years since graduating from Central Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion developing a unique style and approach to photography, which involves transforming and re-photographing images through a constantly evolving series of physical processes and interactions.

Their work focuses on the idea of (re)using things and objects that are ignored or discarded, and putting them together in ways not normally applied in an arts context. One reason they refer to themself as a scientist as well as a photographer and artist.
